The Hunter's Moon Is Lighting Up Our West Coast Skies

Is anyone else feeling a little extra witchy this week?

We've got the Hunter's Moon lighting up the sky, Halloween just around the corner, and the perfect excuse to embrace our inner wild woman. I'm talking barefoot on the beach, dancing naked under the moonlight, salty ocean air in your hair, and maybe howling at the moon for good measure. Because why not?

With Halloween only five days away, the timing couldn't be more perfect for a little moon magic, some good old-fashioned folklore, and a reminder that we're all just wild little creatures living on this beautiful planet.

So, What Exactly Is the Hunter's Moon?

The Hunter's Moon is the first full moon following the Harvest Moon. Its name comes from a time when people relied on the bright autumn moonlight to hunt and gather food in preparation for the long winter months.

This year, the Hunter's Moon reached its fullest point on Sunday evening, October 25, here on Vancouver Island, but it'll still be looking beautifully full tonight.

Pretty cool to think that the same moon lighting up our beaches, forests, and mountains has been guiding people through the changing seasons for thousands of years.

A Little Moon Magic Before Halloween

Now, here's where things get a little hippie-dippy, and I'm all for it. In folklore and spiritual traditions, the full moon is often associated with release, transformation, and new beginnings. A chance to let go of things that feel heavy and make room for whatever comes next.

And with Halloween just around the corner, the timing feels extra magical. Halloween has roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, traditionally marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. In folklore, it was believed to be a time when the boundary between the living and spirit worlds grew thinner.

Whether you believe in moon energy, love a good spooky story, or appreciate the beauty of nature, there's something pretty enchanting about this time of year. The trees are shedding their leaves, the earth is slowing down, and maybe we can take a little inspiration from that. Let go of what you don't need. Make space for something new. Trust the changing seasons.

And maybe dance naked under the moonlight while you're at it. No judgment here.

A Little West Coast Moon Ritual

You don't need crystals, tarot cards, or a cauldron bubbling away in the backyard to enjoy a little moon magic. Although, if you've got them, this is definitely their season!

Here's my kind of full moon evening:

Get outside. Head to the beach, wander into the backyard, or find somewhere you can see that big, beautiful moon. Kick off your shoes. Feel the sand or earth beneath your feet. Get a little wild. Let something go. Think about what you've been carrying that you no longer need. Give it to the moon, the ocean, or the universe.

Make a wish. Call it manifesting, setting an intention, or sending good vibes into the cosmos. Dance like nobody's watching. Bonus points if you're naked. Just make sure you've found yourself a private stretch of beach!

Stay Wild, Moon Child

I can’t get enough of Vancouver Island in the fall. The mist rolling through the forests, the ocean air turning crisp, the golden leaves scattered across the trails, and now a glowing Hunter's Moon watching over it all.

Halloween might bring the costumes, candy, and spooky decorations, but Mother Nature has been putting on her own magical show all month long.

So tonight, if the clouds give us a break, get outside and take a peek at that beautiful moon. Make a wish. Dance in the sand. Howl at the sky. Embrace your weird, wonderful, wild self. Because life is far too short not to believe in a little magic.

Stay wild, moon child.
Love, Carly
